| my day in pictures: food & media. |
[Nov. 6th, 2009|10:19 pm] |
After three weeks of working without a single day off, today was the second day of my "weekend", so I indulged in some cooking, lounging, faffing about and picture taking.
Chicken salad (roasted chicken breast, red onion, celery, fennel stem, mayo, sour cream, horseradish-mustard) on whole grain toast with avocado and pancetta. {The Sulu action is directly related to my having come across this photo of crossover HILARITY this morning.)
( OM NOM NOM NOM )
I am soooo into food these days. You should take some snaps and share, too! |

I have been pushing Nick Flynn's Another Bullshit Night in Suck City on everyone I know, and it's your turn.
I stumbled upon Flynn when I picked up a copy of Best American Non-required Reading 2009 (so-so) and it contained a copy of Flynn's essay on Abu Ghraib, torture, photography & memory for Esquire magazine, The Ticking Is the Bomb, which is another must read. ("When asked, I'll sometimes say I'm writing about torture, but I've found that when I say the word torture, many go glassy-eyed, as if I had just dropped a stone into a deep, deep well.").
ABNiSC is a memoir that reads like great fiction (or maybe we just wish it was fiction, that these kinds of life horrors couldn't actually happen, hadn't happened, in fact). It details, mainly, the events that led to Flynn working in a homeless shelter and having the distinct disadvantage of his father walking through the door one night, looking for a bed.
I think it's so good, below the cut you will find mega-sized scanned copies of the first few pages (click on the thumbnails), for you to check out and, inevitably, fall in love with.
( Ray tells me that my father lives in a rooming house on Beacon Hill. I take the address, fold it into my pocket, and on the drive back to Boston toss it out the window. Years later Clare will tell me that Jonathan would never mention my brother or me at all, that it seemed to her that we just weren't that important to him. )
See? AMAZING. Now you want the whole book, I know. So go out and get it.
In related news, does anyone have a .mp3 of Rufus Wainwright's Dinner At Eight? I offer the gods this My Morning Jacket cover of Bread's Make It With You (heeeeeeeeeeee.). |

Okay, so here's some more ranting about the episode. It started out okay, but IMO it went downhill pretty fast. ( spoilers for the episode )

And once again, when a couple of white, suburban kids shoot up a school, it's because they must have been victims of a campaign of alienation or they must have been pressured, bullied to the point of no return, when it's obvious that the truth is they were fucking sociopaths. But when a guy named Hasan snaps, it's because it's built into his genetic code, you just never know when a Cylon -- er, a Muslim, is going to get triggered by some computer in Mecca. |

| V |

I watched the V pilot today, and I have to say I'm impressed. I'm not a fan of the original show; I watched it sporadically back when it aired and it never really grabbed me, but this one? Looks really good and really promising. And I was expecting cheesy.

Jeez. The remake of Fame is just awful. I mean, I had no real expectations about this movie, and it still managed to disappoint. It's *that* bad.
UGH.

My internet is very intermittent, but stealing a bit of wireless to say -- because at this point, what does it matter? -- yes, yes! I am fine! Jail was actually pretty boring. Except for the parts that were TOTALLY HILARIOUS.
Stories of my time in the slammer to come soon! |

Hey, guess where I was tonight?
If your guess was, IN JAIL, congratulations! That is the right answer!
ohmygod.
YOU GUYS I HAVE PEE'D IN A JAIL BATHROOM TONIGHT.
Evidently an unpaid speeding ticket equals a WARRANT FOR YOUR ARREST in this fair state of mine?
Dear Colorado: you don't require a background check to buy a fully automatic firearm but you arrest people for not sending a check? Okay, then!
I've been on the INSIDE. I will never be the same again.
Btw, catechism saved my life tonight. But that's not the only reason she's awesome. I'm so sorry, P.! The amphitheater was cool, though, right? |
